Artist’s Statement (Thinker & Thoughts series).
This is a body of work comprising a series of about 20 paintings completed over 2024-2025. The Series navigates the delicate space between the tangible and the imagined. Alan’s aim has been to explore how we confront the myriad challenges of our contemporary world through the simple yet profound act of thinking. At the heart of each painting is the figure of the Thinker—a reimagined classic pose that is both observer and mediator. In Alan’s reinterpretation, the Thinker is partially abstracted, intentionally androgynous, and fluid in form, reflecting a rich tapestry of cultural traditions. This figure is not confined by the limits of gender or identity; rather, it embodies a universal human experience, inviting viewers to find their own reflections in its form. Yet, the Thinker does not stand alone. Surrounding this central figure are the Thoughts—the supporting, almost spectral, figures that represent the conflicting emotions and responses we all experience when faced with the complexities of modern life. These Thoughts capture the internal debates that arise as we grapple with issues such as indecision, justice, environmental degradation, and homelessness. Other themes include the competition inherent in our capitalistic society, the boundaries of creativity and ambition, and the interplay between desire and restraint. They are a visual echo of the internal dialogues that shape our understanding of the world. Each painting is a meditation on the scope of reality and illusion, inviting viewers to explore the spectrum of emotional and intellectual responses that emerge when we pause and truly think. There is a narrative for each painting—a guide for those who wish to delve deeper into the stories and symbolism behind the imagery offering context and insight into the themes that permeate the series. |

Artist's Statement. The surface appearance of the human body can be examined in many ways. Faces and hands are the most recognisable parts of the human body and reinterpreting the shapes and juxtapositions of these body parts allows us to re-examine what we may assume. Body posture evokes emotion. Whether the body is still or moving, the figure has its own fascination. In stillness, we can have meditation. In movement we can appreciate the shape, form and beauty of the human body.
